In astronomy and astrology, the term zodiac refers to the band of sky through which the sun, moon, and planets move–at least as seen from Earth. The sun (or another celestial entity) is considered to be “in” a constellation when it moves into the zodiac region that includes that constellation. The zodiac dates back to ancient civilizations like the Greeks and Romans, who thought that the positions of heavenly bodies could be utilized to predict the future. Astronomy and astrology were the same for them–which is no longer the case!
In astrology, a zodiac sign refers to one of the 12 zodiac constellations through which the sun travels. The character of the zodiac in which a person was born is the one in which the sun was at the time of their birth. Astrology holds the notion that a person’s personality may be predicted based on their zodiac sign. According to astrology, the position of the sun, moon, and planets in the zodiac constellations may also be used to foretell the future. A horoscope is an astrological map of the planets and zodiac signs; the term is often used to refer to a future forecast based on such a map.
